| 1-7-12 Lions tame Rebels for Redden title Ouachita put together a big fourth-quarter surge to knock off West Monroe 59-51 Saturday and win the championship game of the Don Redden Memorial Classic at Ouachita. The game was a rematch of last week's West Monroe tournament championship game, which Ouachita won 71-68. This matchup was just as tough and intense. Ouachita, which trailed 36-35 after three quarters, began the fourth period with an 8-0 run and built the lead to 50-40. But the Rebels charged back with a 9-2 run to pull within three with 1:08 to play. But Ouachita's Josh Harris and Chris Sumbler combined to make 5-of-6 free throws -- two after a West Monroe technical foul -- over the next 17 seconds to put the Lions back in control. The victory marked the fourth consecutive year that Ouachita has won its own tournament, equaling the best streak in the history of the event. The win also improved the Lions to 16-5 on the season. "The Redden is always tough,'' Ouachita Coach Casey Jones said. "I think it was a gutsy performance after four straight days. I know we had some lapses, and I think that's because of fatigue, but I'm proud of the guys. They stuck to the game plan, and came through in the end.'' Ouachita led 14-6 after the first quarter, but the Rebels outscored the Lions 30-21 over the next two quarters to take the lead. Chris Sumbler scored 13 points for Ouachita, and Cameron Sims added 12 points and 10 rebounds. Josh Harris, named tournament MVP, had 10 points along with Kwame Fletcher. Toney Foster had 12 points and Yettra Specks 11 for West Monroe. "Hats off to the Rebels,'' Jones said. "They had a tremendous tournament. We look forward to two more battles in district.'' The Lions and Rebels won't have to wait long for the first of those battles. The two teams will meet again Friday at West Monroe in the District 2-5A opener. Third-place game Carroll 52, LaGrange 49 -- Carroll trailed throughout most of the game Saturday against LaGrange, but the Bulldogs made a late fourth-quarter surge to capture third place in the Don Redden Memorial Classic. LaGrange led 27-21 at the half, but Carroll began to chip away in the third period. The Bulldogs completed the comeback with a 17-12 advantage in the fourth. Dennis Price and James Donahue had 12 points each to lead Carroll. Alfred Bartie scored 21 for LaGrange, and Alonzo Papillion added 15. Consolation Final Richwood 99, Rayville 62 -- Richwood jumped on Rayville early and often Saturday as the Rams won the Consolation Final of the Don Redden Memorial Classic at Ouachita.
