Lions slip past Central
   Ouachita scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to
edge past Central 12-11 Thursday at Ouachita in the Bayou State
Classic.
   The Lions (4-2) led 9-4 after three innings, but Central scored five
runs in the fifth inning and single runs in the sixth and seventh to take
an 11-9 lead before Ouachita rallied.
   Kyle Morace (1-0) picked up the victory. Adam Coco, Matt
Debolt, Caleb Kennedy, and Kyle Tolson each had doubles for
Ouachita.
   The tournament, which is being held at five schools, will continue
today. The schedule at Ouachita is as follows: Southwood vs.
Walker, 3:15 p.m.; Ouachita vs. Hahnville, 5:30 p.m.; and Menard
vs. St. Amant, 8 p.m

Bourgeois rally tops Ouachita
   A seven-point Ouachita lead with less two minutes to play slipped
away as H.L Bourgeois rallied for a 62-59 victory in a Cklass 5A
boys semifinal game Friday night at Ouachita.
   Bourgeois (24-11) scored the final 10 points of the game,
including a Khiry Williams 3-pointer with 5.7 seconds to play to win
the see-saw game.
   Ouachita (23-14) led 20-9 after the first quarter, but Bourgeois
rallied to tie the game at 30-30 at halftime. Bourgeois took a 43-42
lead into the fourth quarter, but Ouachita surged ahead before the
Braves staged the wild late rally.
   Sophomore Antonio Landers led Ouachita with 18 points and 14
rebounds, his fourth consecutive double-double. Nick Haywood
added 12 points, and Jeremie Mitchell had 11.
   Tramel White scored 30 points to pace Bourgeois, which
advances to the Top 28 next week. Stevie Howard added 19.

Sterlington blanks Lady Lions
     Sterlington pitching held the Ouachita softball team to two hits
Thursday as the Lady Panthers took a 3-0 win at Ouachita. Deven
Reese was the winning pitcher. Jenice Tillman took the loss for
Ouachita.

2-28-08 (Baseball)
Ouachita at home today
   The Ouachita baseball team will play at home today as the first
day of the Bayou State Classic gets underway. The four-day
tournament involves twenty teams at five school sites -- Ouachita,
Neville, West Monroe, West Ouachita, and Ruston.
   Ouachita will play today at 5 p.m. against Central. DeRidder and
Thibodaux will play at Ouachita at 7:30 p.m.
   Friday's scheduled games at Ouachita are as follows:
Southwood vs. Walker, 3:15 p.m.; Ouachita vs. Hahnville, 5:30 p.m.;
and Menard vs. St. Amant, 8 p.m.
   Saturday's scheduled games at Ouachita are as follows: Holy
Cross vs. Airline, 9:30 a.m.; Ouachita vs. Eunice, noon; Denham
Springs vs. Tioga, 2:30 p.m.; East Ascension vs. Captain Shreve, 5
p.m.; and Ouachita vs. Parkway, 7:30 p.m.

Ouachita rallies past Westgate
   The Ouachita Lions put together a big second-half surge to roar
past defending Class 5A champion Westgate 71-65 Tuesday night
in a 5A regional basketball playoff game in New Iberia.
   No. 12 seed Ouachita (23-13) erased a 47-38 halftime deficit
and a double-digit deficit in the third quarter by outscoring the No. 5
Tigers 22-10 in the third quarter. Anotnio Landers had seven of his
game-high 17 points in the period, and Jeremie Mitchell had six
points on two three-pointers.
   Ouachita gradually built a lead in the fourth quarter, and then the
Lions used a slow-down offense to keep Westgate (27-9) at bay.
   Landers finished the game with his third consecutive
double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Nick Haywood
added 14 points and Mitchell 13.
   The victory advances No. 12 seed Ouachita to the 5A
quarterfinals. Ouachita will play host to No. 13 seed H.L. Bourgeois
on Friday at 7 p.m. Bourgeois defeated No. 4 seed St. Thomas
More 57-56 Tuesday.
   Ouachita staged its comeback despite foul trouble. Mike Shaw,
Haywood, and Mitchell all spent time on the bench in the third and
fourth quarters. But the Lions received a spark from its bench as
Danny Chatman, Brandon Williams, and Alonzo Martin all logged
valuable time and made key contributions. Martin finished with
seven points while Chatman and Williams scored four apiece.

2-27-08 (Girls basketball)
Maria Brown named all-district
    Ouachita sophomore post player Maria Brown has been named
to the District 2-5A all-district first team, which is selected by district
coaches.
    Brown, a 5-11 sophomore, averaged 15 points and eight
rebounds per game for the Lady Lions, who finished 33-9 and
advanced the the Class 5A regionals.
    Ouachita seniors Quinishia McDowell and Miesha Williams are
on the third team.
    Joining Brown on the first team are West Monroe's Kassieta
Brown and Miranda Holt, and Natchitoches-Central's Brandy Broom
and Darnisha Hamilton.
    West Monroe's Brown is the district MVP, and
Natchitoches-Central coach Emma Boozman is the Coach of the
Year.

Lions to face defending champ
   Ouachita's quest for a Class 5A boys basketball championship
takes a road trip to New Iberia to face the defending state
champion.
   The Lions will play Westgate on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in a regional
playoff game. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m., and radio station
KMYY 92.3-FM will broadcast the game.
   Ouachita, the No. 12 seed and 22-13 on the season, advanced
with a 49-37 victory over Bonnabel in the first round. Westgate, No.
5 and 27-8, defeated John Ehret 37-31 in overtime.
   Ouachita features a versatile attack with four players averaging in
double figures. Nick Haywood leads the way at 15.9 points per
game, followed by Antonio Landers at 11.1. Haywood and Landers
scored 19 points apiece in the first-round win. Haywood also had
13 rebounds to record his second consecutive double-double.
   The Lions have won six consecutive games, and Haywood has
averaged 21.1 points per game during that stretch. The Lions have
also won 10 of their last 12 games.
   Raymon Jones, a 6-6 senior, leads Westgate with an average of
21.2 points and 12 rebounds per game.

Lions advance to regionals
   Ouachita overcame a sluggish first half to overpower Bonnabel
49-37 in a Class 5A first-round boys basketball playoff game Friday
night at Ouachita.
   Nick Haywood and Antonio Landers scored 19 points apiece to
lead No. 12 seed Ouachita (22-13).
   The victory sends Ouachita into the regional round next Tuesday
at No. 5 seed Westgate. Westgate, the defending 5A champion,
beat John Ehret 37-31 in overtime Friday.
   Tip-off for Tuesday's game is scheduled for 7 p.m. The game will
be broadcast in northeastern Louisiana on radio station KMYY
92.3-FM.

   Ouachita led Bonnabel 11-7 after one quarter, but No. 21
Bonnabel (17-9) used a 16-6 advantage in the second quarter to
take a 23-17 halftime lead in a defensive game. Haywood scored
nine points in the third quarter to push Ouachita ahead by two points
heading into the fourth quarter. The Lions gradually pulled away
from the Bruins.

Sterlington slips past Ouachita
   Sterlington scored a run in the bottom of the eighth inning
Wednesday to edge Ouachita, 4-3, in a softball game at
Sterlington. The loss drops the Lady Lions to 2-1 on the season.

2-20-08 (Boys Basketball)
Lions seeded No. 12 in 5A  
   The Ouachita boys basketball team received the No. 12 seed in
the Class 5A playoff bracket selected by the coaches Wednesday.
The seed among the top 16 teams means that the Lions will open
the playoffs at home Friday.
    Ouachita, 21-13 on the season, will play host to No. 21 Bonnabel
(17-8) on Friday. Tip-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. at The Mad House.
    Admission for the game is $5 at the door. The game will also be
broadcast on radio station KMYY 92.3-FM.

OPHS players earn all-district
   Eleven Ouachita soccer players have been named to the Division
1, District 2 all-district soccer team.
   Ryan Gebhardt was named the Offensive MVP of the boys team.
Ross Free and Justin Black were named to the first team. Marquise
Chisley, Logan Ladart, and Natthaphol Wittayarungroj were
selected to the second team.
    Lindsay Black and Rachel Rugg were named to the girls first
team. Receiving second-team honors were Kelsey Dearman,
Brittany Landry, and Sydney Lengefeld.

Lions start season with a win
   The Ouachita baseball team opened the 2008 season with a
road victory Tuesday. Ouachita outlasted Vidalia in a slugfest,
14-10.
    Ouachita trailed 4-1 after two innings, but the Lions posted seven
runs in the third to surge ahead. Ryan Gebhardt hit a home run for
Ouachita. Justin Guy picked up the victory on the mound.

2-18-08 (Girls basketball)
Lady Lions fall in 5A regionals
   Ouachita rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit, but the No. 6
seeded Lady Lions came up short in a 36-33 loss to No. 11
Chapelle in a Class 5A regional playoff game Monday night at
Ouachita.
   Ouachita trailed 34-33 and had three shots at the basket with
less than 10 seconds to play, but the shots would not fall. Chapelle's
Olivia Grayson sank two free throws with 0.7 seconds left to close
out the scoring.
    Ouachita (33-9 jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first quarter, but
the Chapelle Chipmunks (21-8) closed out the first quarter with a
19-5 run to take a 20-11 halftime lead.
   Ouachita used pressure defense to claw its way back into the
game, tying it up in the third quarter and trailing just 28-27 after
three periods. The teams played a close game the rest of the way.
   Kristen Cromwell and Miesha Williams scored eight points
apiece to lead Ouachita. Leading scorers Quinishia McDowell and
Maria Brown were held to three and six points, respectively.
Grayson scored 13 points to pace Chapelle.

2-15-08 (Boys basketball)
Lions take first place
   The Ouachita Lions boys basketball team earned the right to
hang another championship banner inside The Mad House with a
thrilling 64-62 win over the West Monroe Rebels on Friday night.
Ouachita's win at home gave the Lions a 5-1 record in District 2-5A,
tied for first with Ruston.
   Mike Shaw scored the winning points on a tip-in as time expired.
Nick Haywood scored 32 points to lead Ouachita (21-13) to a
victory at The Mad House. Antonio Landers had a double-double
with 12 points and 12 rebounds. The Lions have to wait until
Wednesday's playoff seeding meeting to find out their first-round
playoff opponent.

2-15-08 (Girls basketball)
Lady Lions advance to regionals
   The Ouachita Lady Lions held off South Lafourche 60-54
Thursday night to pick up a first-round victory in the girls Class 5A
basketball playoffs. Maria Brown scored a career-high 30 points
and pulled down 13 rebounds to lead Ouachita (33-8). Quinishia
McDowell added 18 points.
   The win at home earned Ouachita a regional playoff game at
home Monday against the Chapelle Chipmunks (27-8). Tip-off is
scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Admission is $5 at the door.

2-15-08 (Softball)
Lady Lions roll past Caldwell
   The Ouachita softball team picked up a big win Thursday against
the Caldwell Lady Spartans. Ouachita won 12-3 to improve to 2-0
on the season.

2-13-08 (Girls basketball)
McDowell commits to North Texas
   Ouachita Lady Lions' senior guard Qunishia McDowell gave a
verbal commitment to play basketball at the University of North
Texas. McDowell chose North Texas from among several
scholarship offers, including Arkansas State and Missouri-Kansas
City.
   McDowell averages 15.1 points per game to lead Ouachita in
scoring. McDowell also leads the team in steals (3.4) and assists
(3.2), and she is second in rebounds (5.8). Despite tearing an ACL
and missing three games, McDowell has returned to the lineup to
help the Lady Lions on their march into the playoffs.

2-6-08 (Football)
Tight end Edwards signs with LSU
   Ouachita senior tight end Tyler Edwards (6-4, 227) signed a
national letter-of-intent to play football at LSU. Edwards signed at 9
a.m. on Wednesday, February 6 - national signing day.
   Edwards had already verbally committed to play at LSU. The
signing ceremony left little doubt that Edwards would make good on
his commitment. Edwards had an LSU helmet on the table in front
of him and a large purple and gold LSU banner draped behind him
before he signed.
   Edwards finished his senior season with 19 catches for 213
yards and two touchdowns in Ouachita's run-oriented offense. He
also scored a rushing touchdown and helped pave the way for
1,000-yard rusher Montrell Conner.
