| 3-30-08 (Baseball) Lions sweep up Natchitoches Ouachita rallied from a four-run deficit Saturday to defeat Natchitoches-Central 6-5 in a District 2-5A baseball game at Natchitoches. The win gave Ouachita (12-9, 3-1 in 2-5A) a sweep of the three- game series that started last Tuesday. The Lions beat Natchitoches 7-4 at Natchitoches on Tuesday and 12-2 at Ouachita on Thursday. In Saturday's game, Ryan Gebhardt got the pitching win and hit a home run to help Ouachita overcome a 5-1 deficit after three innings. Kyle Morace also hit a home run and a double for Ouachita. On Thursday, Ouachita jumped out to a 3-0 lead and blanked Natchitoches over the first five innings en route to the 12-2 victory. Thomas Hoag hit a home run and earned the win on the mound. Caleb Kennedy also homered for the Lions. Ouachita will be back in action at home Tuesday in a 2-5A game against Ruston. Gametime is scheduled for 5 p.m. 3-26-08 (Baseball) Lions knock off Natchitoches for District 2-5A victory Matt Diebold hit a home run and Andy Roberts earned the win on the mound Tuesday as the Ouachita baseball team defeated Natchitoches-Central 7-4 in a District 2-5A baseball game at Natchitoches. Kyle Tolson and Kyle Morace each hit doubles for the Lions, who improved to 10-9 overall and 1-1 in District 2-5A. Natchitoches took a 3-2 lead after one inning, but Ouachita surged ahead with a four-run second inning. Ouachita added a lone run in the sixth, while Natchitoches tallied its final run in the bottom of the seventh. The two teams will meet again Thursday in a district game at Ouachita. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m. 3-26-08 (Basketball) Ouachita's Brown, Haywood receive All-State honors Ouachita basketball players Maria Brown and Nick Haywood have both been named honorable mention All-State by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association. Brown, a 5-11 sophomore post player, was named honorable mention on the Class 5A girls team after averaging 15 points, eight rebounds, and two blocks per game. She helped the lady Lions to a 33-9 record and the Class 5A regionals. Haywood, a 6-0 guard, was named honorable mention on the Class 5A boys team after a standout junior season. Haywood led the Lions in scoring with 15.8 points per game as Ouachita advanced to the Class 5A quarterfinals. Haywood also averaged 3.6 assists, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.1 steals per game. Both Brown and Haywood were selected to their respective District 2-5A first teams. Both players were also named to the All- Northeast Louisiana Basketball Team second team by The News- Star newspaper. 3-21-08 (Baseball) Lions drop district opener West Monroe jumped out to a big early lead and turned back a Ouachita rally Thursday as the Rebels beat the Lions 10-5 at Ouachita in the District 2-5A baseball opener for both teams. West Monroe took a 9-0 lead after three innings behind the pitching and hitting of Shelby Aulds. He blanked the Lions over the first three innings and belted two home runs to spark the West Monroe offense. Ouachita (9-9, 0-1 in 2-5A) came to life in the fourth inning. The Lions drew a couple of walks and put together some timely hits to plate five runs. Ouachita, however, could not score again, and the Rebels tacked on another run. Ouachita will return to district action Tuesday at Natchitoches- Central in a scheduled 5 p.m. game. 3-21-08 (Football) Conner gains recognition Ouachita running back Montrell Conner is grabbing his share of big-time recognition before his senior season. The 6-2, 215-pound junior ran for 1,139 yards and 13 touchdowns this past season in leading the Lions to the Class 5A playoffs.That production is aying off during the off-season. Two prominent recruiting sources list Conner among the top high school players in the nation for next season. Rivals.com has Conner at No. 75 on its Top 100 list. He is also on the ESPN Top 150. Earlier this week, Conner received an invitation to play in the 2009 Under Armour All-American Game. The game is scheduled to be played January 4, 2009, on ESPN. Conner has not yet accepted the invitation. 3-21-08 (Football) Spring football is just ahead Today -- March 21 -- is exactly one month before Ouachita will lace up the cleats to begin spring football. Ouachita, and other Louisiana high schools, can begin spring football April 21. Ouachita Coach John Carr said that the Lions will opene spring practice on Monday, April 21. Louisiana High School Athletic Association rules state that schools may have fifteen days of spring football practice with or without pads. A team may also have one interschool scrimmage or shortened game on one of the fifteen practice days. 3-21-08 (Softball) W.Monroe rally stops Lady Lions A late West Monroe rally Thursday denied the Ouachita softball team its first District 2-5A win of the season and gave the Lady Rebels a 5-1 victory. Ouachita (7-12-3, 0-4 in 2-5A) led 1-0 at home after five innings, but West Monroe scored a run in the top of the sixth to tie the score. The game went to the seventh and final inning tied at 1-1, but West Monroe broke it open with four runs in the top of the seventh. Ouachita was unable to score in the bottom of the seventh. 3-19-08 (Softball) Natchitoches stops Lady Lions Natchitoches-Central kept Ouachita off the scoreboard Tuesday as the Lady Chiefs defeated the Lady Lions 4-0 in a District 2-5A softball game at Ouachita. 3-18-08 (Baseball) St. Frederick defeats Lions St. Frederick tallied double-digit hits and two home runs as the Warriors beat Ouachita 12-2 Monday at Ouachita. Aaron Thibodeaux hit a grand slam and Jake Brown added a home run for St. Frederick, which outhit Ouachita 13-7. Ouachita led 1-0 after two innings, but St. Frederick (10-8) broke the game open with seven runs in the third. Matt Diebold had a home run for Ouachita (9-8), and Thomas Hoag had two doubles. Ouachita is scheduled to begin District 2-5A play Thursday with a home game against West Monroe. The team, selected by The News-Star newspaper, was announced today. OPHS guard Antonio Landers received honorable mention honors on the team. Haywood, a 6-0 junior, averaged 15.8 points per game to lead the Lions in scoring. Landers, a 6-2 sophomore, was second in scoring for the Lions with 11.6 points per game and second in rebounds with 6.6 per game. 3-17-08 (Baseball) Lions knock off Neville, 14-13 Ouachita banged out nine eights and took advantage of eight Neville errors as the Lions edged the Tigers 14-13 in the final round of the Eighth Annual Chevron/Ouachita Baseball Tournament. Andy Roberts (2-0) picked up the win, and Thomas Hoag earned the save. Hoag, Erik Drebber, and Kyle Tolson each had doubles for Ouachita (9-7). Ouachita is scheduled to return to the field today with a 3 p.m. home game against St. Frederick. 3-17-08 (Track) Carter, Bacle finish first The Ouachita girls track team picked up two first-place finishes last Thursday at the Viking Relays at Airline High School in Bossier City. Toni Carter won the 100-meter dash with a time of 12.13 seconds. Brittany Bacle, last year's Class 4A state champion in the high jump, won that event at Airline with a leap of 5 feet, 0 inches. In the boys competition, Ouachita's Michael Doublin placed second in the triple jump. 3-15-08 (Soccer) Ouachita boys receive All-Northeast Soccer honors A total of four Ouachita boys soccer players were named to the All-Northeast Louisiana Regional Soccer Team selected by area coaches. Senior forward Ross Free and sophomore forward Ryan Gebhardt were both named to the first team. Senior forward Note Wittayarungroj and senior midfielder Erik Drebber were named to the second team. 3-14-08 (Soccer) Three OPHS girls make All-Northeast team Three Ouachita girls soccer players have been named to the All-Northeast Louisiana Regional Soccer Team selected by area coaches. Seniors Rachel Rugg and Ashleigh Goodman were named first-team defenders. Senior Lindsay Black was named a first-team midfielder. 3-14-08 (Baseball) Dutchtown defeats Ouachita Dutchtown had 11 hits and scored runs in every inning Thursday to beat host Ouachita 14-2 on the first day of the Eighth Annual Chevron/Ouachita Baseball Tournament. Winning pitcher Dillan Day, Justin Boudreaux, and Jesse Buratt each hit home runs for Dutchtown. Ouachita (7-6) was held to just three hits. Josh Copeland (2-1) suffered his first loss of the season. Ouachita will play at home again today against Warren Central at 7 p.m. The twelve-team tournament will also continue at its two other sites -- West Monroe and Neville. Oak Grove edged the Ouachita girls 4-3. Brian Eaton and Tyler Ainsworth picked up singles victories for the boys team. Boys who won in doubles action included Eaton, Ainsworth, Sam Horner, Jerome Walker, Ryan Hutto, Peter Ok, and Note Wittayarungroj. Amanda Wallace, Kristina Ok, Katie Hickingbottom, and Michelle Hayes all won in doubles play. The Ouachita tennis team will be in action this weekend in the Bolton Cup at ULM. 3-12-08 (Boys basketball) Ouachita's Haywood, Landers make all-district basketball team Ouachita guards Nick Haywood and Antonio Landers have been selected to the District 2-5A all-district boys basketball team. The team was chosen by the district coaches. Ouachita Coach Casey Jones, who guided his team to a share of the district title and the Class 5A quarterfinals, was named district co-Coach of the Year along with Ruston's Chris Bush. Haywood, a 6-0 junior, averaged 15.8 points per game to lead the Lions in scoring. He also averaged 3.6 assists, 2.1 steals, and 2.8 rebounds per game. He led the team in free-throw percentage at 73.4 percent and also made 45-of-159 3-pointers. Landers, a 6-2 sophomore, was second in scoring for the Lions with 11.6 points per game and second in rebounds with 6.6 per game. Landers also averaged 1.6 steals per game, and he led the team with 116 offensive rebounds and with a 50.3 field-goal percentage. Ouachita's Mike Shaw, a 6-4 junior, was named to the second team. Senior Chris Hoard and junior Jeremie Mitchell were named honorable mention. Joining Haywood and Landers on the first team were Ruston junior Davion Spivey, West Monroe senior Ty King, and Natchitoches-Central junior Gary Payton. Spivey was named the district MVP. 3-12-08 (Baseball) OPHS tourney begins Thursday The Eighth Annual Chevron/Ouachita Baseball Tournament is scheduled to get under way Thursday at three different sites. -- Ouachita, Neville and West Monroe. The four-day tournament includes twelve teams and twenty-four games. Tournament host Ouachita will play at home Thursday at 7 p.m. against Dutchtown, following the Ruston vs. Tioga game (4:30 p.m.).
