Ouachita to play host to Richwood on Friday
Ouachita Parish High School's 2008 football season opener scheduled for Friday at Carroll has been
changed.
The Lions will now open the season at home Friday night against Richwood. Kickoff is scheduled for 7
p.m. at Lion Stadium.
The heavy rains and bad weather from Hurricane Gustav forced many schools to change their plans for
the first week of the season. Ouachita and Carroll worked on an alternate plan, but could not find a time and
place that was suitable for both teams.
Richwood was scheduled to open the season at Washington-Marion, but that game was cancelled.
It appeared Wednesday afternoon that Ouachita would have an open date to start the season, but
Ouachita Coach John Carr and Richwood Coach Warren Trimble got together and worked out an
agreement to play.
"Coach Trimble and I were in the same situation Wednesday,'' Carr said. "We wanted to play a
ballgame, and we both needed opponents. Both of us thought it was important to play a game this week.''
Tickets for the game are $5 each, and all tickets are general admission. Tickets may be purchased in
the Ouachita main office Friday from 11 a.m.-3 p.m. or at the main gate Friday night.

Ouachita wins offensive shootout with Richwood
Fans who like a lot of offense got their money's worth Friday night at Ouachita Parish High School.
Ouachita survived the battle of the potent offenses with Richwood as the Lions opened the season with a
31-28 win at home.
It was the first time the schools had played in thirty years, and this one was every bit as exciting as
Ouachita's 13-12 win over Richwood in 1978.
The two teams combined for 825 yards total offense -- 411 for Richwood and 414 for Ouachita.
Ouachita running back Montrell Conner started his senior season with a big game, rushing for 242 yards
and two touchdowns on 16 carries.
Ouachita trailed 20-17 at halftime, but the Lions opened the second half with a 71-yard scoring drive to
take a 24-20 lead. Senior quarterback Corey Treadway scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 3-yard
scramble.
Conner's 74-yard touchdown run with 5:58 to play in the game gave the Lions a 31-20.
Richwood pulled within three points with 22 seconds to play on Greg Johnson's 7-yard scoring pass to
Cedric Goins and Johnson's two-point pass to Jamarcus Jackson. But the Rams' onside kick attempt was
covered by Ouachita's Andy Roberts to seals the Lions' win.
Treadway had a big first half on his way to completing 6-of-15 passes for 131 yards with a touchdown
and interception in his first start. Treadway also ran for 20 yards and a TD.
Brandon Williams caught four of Treadway's passes for 103 yards, including a 62-yard catch and run for a
score in the first quarter.
Johnson had a big night to lead Richwood. He completed 18-of-25 passes for 226 yards and two
touchdowns with one interception. He also ran 21 times for 103 yards and two scores.
Matt Little had Ouachita's other score on a 28-yard field goal in the first half.
Ouachita was scheduled to start the season at Carroll while Richwood was scheduled to open at
Washington-Marion, but the effects of Hurricane Gustav changed plans.
Ouachita will be back at home next week against Neville on Friday at 7 p.m.

ESPNU ranks Maria Brown among nation's top 60 juniors
Ouachita Parish High School junior post player Maria Brown is ranked on the ESPNU HoopGurlz Super
60 girls basketball players for the 2010 class.
Brown, a 6-0 junior, is ranked No. 51 nationally among this year’s junior players.
“I think it is great for her to get that type of ranking,’’ Ouachita Coach John Merritt said. “It proves how
hard she has worked and what a great summer she had playing around the country. Also, it is great for our
program. I am sure that makes her the highest rated player to play for Ouachita.’’
Brown averaged 14.8 points and 7.6 rebounds per game as a sophomore to help lead the Lady Lions to
a 33-9 record and the second round of the Class 5A playoffs. She also averaged 1.8 blocks and 2.4 steals
per game. Brown had game-highs of 30 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 blocked shots last season.
As a sophomore, Brown earned Class 5A All-State honorable mention honors and District 2-5A first
team all-district honors.
Merritt said that a lot of college coaches have already inquired about coming to Ouachita to watch
Brown work out. Brown has verbally committed to any college, but Merritt said that Florida, Louisville,
Oklahoma State, Louisiana Tech, and Southern Mississippi head the list of schools she is considering.
Brown and the Lady Lions are scheduled to begin the 2008-09 season November 13 at home against
Richwood.
NOTE: Another player on the 2010 ESPNU HoopGurlz Super 60 list is 6-2 guard Tyrese Tanner of
Hoover, Alabama, at No. 7. Tanner and her Hoover team, coached by former West Monroe Coach Donnie
Quinn, are scheduled to play in Ouachita’s Lady Lions Hoopfest tournament November 24-26.

Ouachita falls short at home in showdown with Neville
The Ouachita football team found itself in an offensive battle for the second consecutive week, but the
Lions came out on the short end this time around.
Neville quarterback Taylor Burch threw four touchdown passes as the Tigers beat the Lions 36-25 Friday
night at Ouachita.
Senior running back Montrell Conner had another strong performance for Ouachita with 175 yards and
three touchdowns on 23 carries.
A week after outlasting Richwood 31-28, Ouachita (1-1) was unable to catch up to Neville after a 7-7 tie
at the end of the first quarter.
Neville (1-1) surged ahead to a 22-7 halftime lead behind two second-quarter touchdown passes from
Burch. He threw a 10-yard TD to DeAndre Reed and a 13-yarder to Dez Collins.
Neville controlled the first half, outgaining Ouachita 210 yards to 85 and running 38 offensive plays to the
Lions' 18.
Ouachita swung momentum its way in the third quarter with touchdowns on its first two drives to pull within
22-19. Quarterback Corey Treadway capped a nine-play, 80-yard drive with a 3-yard touchdown run, and
Conner ended a nine-play, 69-yard drive with a 13-yard touchdown run.
It looked like the Lions might keep the big swing going after holding Neville to three plays and a punt. But
after moving from its own 23-yard line to near midfield, Ouachita turned the ball over when Treadway fumbled
and Neville recovered at the Ouachita 42. The Tigers scored five plays later on Burch's 24-yard pass to Reed
for a 29-19 lead with 7:14 to play.
The Lions closed the gap to 29-25 with 4:26 remaining when Conner scored on a 3-yard run, but Neville
countered with Reed's 13-yard TD run less than three minutes later.
Ouachita finished with 364 yards total offense while Neville had 335.
Conner's 175 yards gives him 417 yards and five touchdowns in two games. Treadway completed
8-of-20 passes for 90 yards and ran 17 times for 44 yards and a touchdown.
For Neville, Burch completed 11-of-18 passes for 157 yards and four scores. Reed ran 18 times for 89
yards and a score, and he added six catches for 93 yards and two TDs.
Ouachita will be back in action on Friday, September 19, in its District 1-5A opener at Airline. Kickoff is
scheduled for 7 p.m.

Lions hope to bounce back in 1-5A opener at Airline
The Ouachita football team will try to rebound from a tough home loss against Neville last week when the
Lions begin District 1-5A play Friday night at Airline.
Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Vikings Stadium.
Ouachita is 1-1 after a season-opening 31-28 win over Richwood and last week's 36-25 loss to Neville.
Airline is 1-1 and 0-1 in 1-5A.
"They are like us, 1-1,'' Ouachita Coach John Carr said. "They are playing at home, they are 0-1 in district;
we will get their best game.''
The Lions have put up 28 points and nearly 400 yards per game through their first two games, but Carr
said he is looking from a better performance from the talent-laden offense.
"We are not executing the way we need to,'' he said.
Carr also indicated that Ouachita, which has allowed an average of 32 points and 373 yards per game,
may also have some defensive adjustments.
One thing that fans should expect to see is senior running back Montrell Conner running the football.
Conner, who has verbally committed to play at Mississippi State, has 417 yards rushing and five touchdowns
through the first two games. He is averaging 10.7 yards per carry.
In the passing game, Ouachita senior Corey Treadway has completed 14-of-35 passes for 221 yards and
a touchdown. Brandon Williams has eight receptions for 131 yards.
Ouachita won last year's meeting between the two teams, defeating the Vikings 41-0 at Ouachita.

Lions sink Vikings, 31-7
An aggressive defense and an efficient offense helped Ouachita get back on track Friday night as the
Lions rolled past Airline, 31-7, in a District 1-5A game.
Ouachita scored on four of its first six possessions as the Lions (2-1, 1-0 in 1-5A) jumped out to a 24-0
halftime lead.
While the offense was trying to make the most of its opportunities, the defense turned in its best
performance of the young season. Ouachita held Airline (1-2, 0-2) to 167 yards total offense, including 44
yards rushing and minus-3 yards passing in the first half.
Running back Montrell Conner saw limited action, but he made it count. After running five times for 7
yards in the first half, Conner carried the ball twice after halftime for 97 yards, including a 76-yard touchdown
run just 38 seconds into the third quarter. That score put the Lions ahead 31-0.
Conner also had a 1-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. Through three games, Conner has 521 yards
rushing and seven touchdowns.
Ouachita led 14-0 after Conner's TD run and Ryan Gebhardt's 7-yard scoring run. The extra-point kick
after the first score was no good, but Chris Bolton ran in a two-point conversion after Gebhardt's score.
Corey Treadway threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Rarecus Jones in the second quarter, and Matt
Little added the extra point to give the Lions a 21-0 lead. Jones help set up the touchdown with a 64-yard run
on the drive.
Ouachita extended the advantage to 24-0 with 1:37 before halftime as Matt Little kicked a 39-yard field
goal that appeared would have been good from at least 10 more yards.
Airline avoided the shutout in the fourth quarter after Connor Nichols intercepted a BJ Phillips pass that
gave the Vikings the ball at the Ouachita 26-yard line.Four plays later, Reggie Jackson scored on an 8-yard
touchdown run and the PAT kick made the score 31-7.
Ouachita finished the game with 267 yards total offense -- 173 rushing and 94 passing.
Treadway finished the night 8-of-15 for 94 yards and a touchdown.
In addition to his field goal, Matt Little averaged 44.3 yards per punt, including a 66-yard kick. He also
boomed five of his six kickoffs for touchbacks.
Defensively, Ouachita's Xavier Wallace recovered two fumbles, Cornist Broadway and 1.5 sacks, and
David Wright had a sack.
Ouachita will try to improve to 2-0 in district next week when the Lions play host to West Monroe in the
Lions' Den. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.

Rebels slip past Lions in epic 1-5A showdown
Ouachita and West Monroe went toe-to-toe Friday night in a football game before an overflow crowd at
Ouachita's The Lions' Den.
When the dust settled in the showdown, West Monroe had escaped with a 20-19 victory in a thrilling game.
West Monroe, which trailed 19-0 at halftime, took its first lead of the game with 4:02 remaining when Tyler
Cain scored on a 13-yard run. The Rebels failed on a two-point conversion attempt, leaving West Monroe with
a one-point lead.
Ouachita (2-2, 1-1 in 1-5A) charged right back down the field. Big runs by Montrell Conner and quarterback
Corey Treadway, and a Treadway pass to Ryan Gebhardt for 12 yards gave the Lions a first-and-goal at the
seven-yard line with less than a minute to play. A loss by Conner and a procedure penalty backed the Lions
up to the 16 before a short gain by Treadway and a spike gave the Lions a fourth down with 8.3 second left to
play.
Matt Little's attempt at a 31-yard field goal had plenty of distance and appeared it would be good, but slid
just wide to end Ouachita's attempt to knock the state's No. 2 Class 5A team.
The heartbreaking loss also halted the Lions' hopes of beating the Rebels for the first time since 1994,
when Ouachita defeated West Monroe 21-18.
The Lions stunned the Rebels and their fans in the first half. The powerful running of Conner helped the
Lions jump out to a 19-0 lead. The senior, who has committed to Mississippi State, ran 16 times for 165
yards and two touchdowns in the first half.
Conner put the Lions on the board less than three minutes into the game with a 2-yard touchdown run. The
missed extra point left the Lions ahead 6-0.
Ouachita struck again with 6:41 to play in the second quarter. He broke free from numerous attempted
tackles and outran the rest of the Rebel defense for a 65-yard touchdown. Little's PAT put the Lions ahead
13-0.
The Lions capped their stellar first half when Treadway dropped a pass right into the hands of Brandon
Williams for a 30-yard score. The missed PAT kick sent the Lions into the locker room with a 19-0 advantage
at the half.
It took West Monroe less than a minute into the third quarter to get on the scoreboard. Cain capped the
Rebels' opening drive of the quarter with a 7-yard touchdown run, and the PAT kick made it 19-7.
The Rebels (4-0, 3-0) struck again in the third quarter when quarterback D.J. Banks hit Cain for a 10-yard
touchdown. The PAT kick pulled West Monroe within five to set up the fourth-quarter finish.
Conner finished the game with 194 yards on 25 carries. Treadway completed 6-of-15 passes for 108
yards.
Ladarius Abrams ran 20 times for 180 yards for West Monroe. Banks complete 13-of-19 passes for 150
yards.
