| 4-23-11 Johnson's blast lifts Lions Ouachita had managed just four hits -- all singles -- through the first eight innings of its District 2-5A home game against Natchitoches-Central on Friday, and two of those hits never left the infield. Hit No. 5 was a different story. With the game tied in the bottom of the ninth, Jason Johnson delivered the big hit that had eluded the Lions all game. Johnson drove a 3-2 pitch over the left-center field wall with one out for a game-winning, walk-off home run in Ouachita's 5-4 victory. The win improved Ouachita to 14-17 overall and, more importantly, 6-4 in district play. Ouachita remains tied with Pineville for first place in district. -- first place automatically qualifies for the playoffs. Ouachita controls its own fate with two regular-season games remaining -- at Pineville on Tuesday and at West Monroe on Thursday. Ouachita would win the title outright with two wins and would earn at least a share of the title with a victory over Pineville. Ouachita trailed Natchitoches 4-2 going into the bottom of the seventh but scraped together two runs to force extra innings. Taijuan Thomas and T.J.Kijak hit sacrifice flies to drive in the two runs. Tuesday's game at Pineville is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. 3-6-11 Lions survive marathon After nearly four and one-half hours of baseball, Blake Wolfe seized the opportunity to end the marathan game. Wolfe hit a two-run double in the bottom of the 13th inning Tuesday night to lift Ouachita to a 6-5 home win over Sterlington. Diquan Wilson pitched four innings of relief to get the win for Ouachita, which improved to 6-9. Sterlington scored an unearned run in the top of the 13th to take a 5-4 lead before Ouachita rallied in the bottom half. Tijuan Thomas was hit by a pitch, and Garrett Douglas reached on an error. After Jason Johnson was intentionally walked to load the bases and T.J Kijak flied out, Wolfe stepped to the plate. The senior catcher laced a shot to left field to score Thomas and Douglas for the win. 2-27-11 Lions open season on the road The Ouachita baseball team officially started the 2011 season Thursday through Saturday at the East Ascension Tournament in south Louisiana. The Lions finished the tournament 1-3. Ouachita fell to Live Oak 15-3 Thursday but bounced back to beat South Terrebonne 10-8 Friday. The Lions lost two hard-fought games Saturday, losing 10-8 to Destrehan and 7-3 to Dutchtown. The Lions are scheduled to play their home opener Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Neville. 6-27-10 Gebhardt named All-Northeast Baseball Player of the Year Recent Ouachita graduate Ryan Gebhardt has been named the Player of the Year on the All-Northeast Louisiana Baseball Team selected by The News-Star newspaper. The all-area team was announced in Sunday's edition of the newspaper. Also named to the team was Andy Roberts, who also graduated from Ouachita this spring. Roberts made the team as a utility player. The honor for Gebhardt is yet another award after a monster senior season. Gebhardt was also named first-team All-State and the District 2-5A Most Valuable Player. As a senior, Gebhardt hit .509 with 10 home runs and 33 RBIs in leading the Lions to second place in district. He also scored 42 runs, hit 17 doubles, walked 22 times, and struck out just seven times in 110 plate appearances. Gebhardt, who will go to Louisiana Tech on a baseball scholarship, was also the team leader on the mound with an 8-3 record, 2.57 ERA, 67 strikeouts, and just 27 walks. Roberts had a 3.08 ERA as a pitcher before an injury took him off the mound during his senior season. Roberts, however, continued to be a big part of the team at the plate and in the field. Roberts hit .368 with 12 doubles, one home run, and 18 RBIs. 5-20-10 Gebhardt named top player Eleven Lions receive district recognition Ouachita's Ryan Gebhardt was named the Player of the Year in District 2-5A baseball in voting by the district coaches. Gebhardt received the honor after a senior season in which he hit 5.09 with 10 home runs and 33 RBI. He also went 8-3 on the mound with a 2.57 earned-run average and 67 strikeouts. A total of five Ouachita players earned first-team honors and 11 Lions overall were named to the team. Joining Gebhardt on the first team are senior outfielder Adam Coco, senior utility player Andy Roberts, Junior utility player Jason Johnson, and sophomore utility player Garrett Douglas. The four Lions on the second team are senior utility player Justin Black, junior outfielder Malik Richard, junior catcher Blake Wolfe, and sophomore pitcher T.J. Kijak. Freshmen Diquan Wilson and Nathan Navarro received honorable mention recognition. 5-17-10 Gebhardt signs with La. Tech Ouachita Parish High School senior Ryan Gebhardt is trading in his cardinal and white Lion uniform for a blue and red Bulldog model. Gebhardt signed baseball scholarship with Louisiana Tech University on Monday. He made his college choice official during an afternoon signing ceremony in the Slusher Lobby of the Ouachita gym. “I played summer ball with what is basically Tech’s summer team, and I got close with some of the players,’’ Gebhardt said about his decision. “I really like the program and the coaches.’’ Gebhardt will head to Ruston with an impressive high school resume, especially his senior season. The four-year letterman led Ouachita in virtually every batting and pitching category this past season. Offensively, he hit .509 with 42 runs scored, 17 doubles, two triples, 10 home runs, and 33 RBI. He walked 22 times and struck out just seven times in 110 at-bats. On the mound, Gebhardt led the team with an 8-3 record and a 2.57 earned run average. He struck out 67 and walked 21 in 65 and 1/3 innings. He also recorded a save and allowed opponents to hit just .221 against him. “We’re excited for him,’’ Ouachita coach Brian Carter said. “He’s a hard worker and a very fierce competitor. We’re very excited he’s getting this opportunity.’’ Gebhardt hopes to play shortstop on the next level, but he just wants to get on the field and play ball. However, he knows he has to continue to work on his game to succeed on the next level. “It’s going to be faster, the pitching is going to be better, and every aspect of the game is going to be better,’’ Gebhardt said. Carter believes that Gebhardt’s versatility will help him make the jump to the college game. “He swings the bat well enough that he has so many ways to get into the lineup, whether it’s shortstop, third base, or outfield’’ Carter said. “He’s got so many abilities that he can help in several ways.’’ 5-17-10 Gebhardt to sign scholarship Ouachita senior Ryan Gebhardt is scheduled to sign a baseball scholarship today with a Division I college. The signing will take place at 1:30 p.m. in the Slusher Lobby of the OPHS gym. 5-5-10 Dutchtown stops Lions, 4-0 The Ouachita baseball team held No. 4 seed Dutchtown to four hits, but the Lions committed five errors and allowed six walks as Dutchtown beat Ouachita 4-0 Tuesday night in a Class 5A first-round playoff game at Dutchtown. The loss ends Ouachita's season with an 18-16 record. The teams were scoreless through three and a half innings, but Dutchtown scored three unearned runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. The Griffins added another run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Ouachita led off the game with a triple and two other times had runners in scoring position with one out or no outs, but the Lions were unable to push across any runs. 5-3-10 Lions open playoffs on the road The Ouachita baseball team is seeded No. 29 in the Class 5A playoff bracket and will travel to play No. 4 seed Dutchtown on Tuesday. Ouachita is 18-15 on the season and finished second in District 2-5A. The Dutchtown Griffins are 25-10 and finished second in District 6-5A. The teams played twice during the regular season with Dutchtown winning both games. The Griffins beat the Lions 10-5 in the East Ascension Tournament in February, and Dutchtown sqieaked by Ouachita 9-8 March 19 in the Chevron/Ouachita Tournament. The game will be carried live on radio in the Monroe area on Fox 92.7-FM. Ouachita is coming off a thrilling 12-11 win over No. 9 seed West Monroe to end the regular season. Ouachita trailed the Rebels by six runs in the game before staging a rally, which included a three-run double by Justin Black in the bottom of the seventh inning to win the game. 4-29-10 Lions trip West Monroe, 12-11 The Ouachita baseball team finished the regular season in dramatic style, scoring three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to beat District 2-5A rival West Monroe 12-11 Thursday night at Lion Field.
