Lady Lions helping shoot for a good cause
The Ouachita girls basketball team hopes to see The Madhouse transform into a “Pink Palace’’ on Tuesday, February 7, as the Lady Lions play host to Winnfield in the “Shooting for a Cure’’  basketball game. The team and school encourage all fans to wear pink at the game to show their support in the fight against breast cancer.

The game is scheduled to tip off at 6 p.m. February 7 and is part of a doubleheader with the boys teams for both schools. The game, however, is just one of the ways that the Lady Lions are helping a good cause. The team is also selling pink shirts and is raising funds through food sales at a local restaurant.

The team now has pink T-shorts on sale in the school's main office for $10 and has set up a fundraiser at Catfish Charlie’s on Wednesday, February 1. A portion of the food sales from 4-8:30 p.m. on that day will go toward the fight against breast cancer when customers mention the Lady Lions at the register.

Altogether, the Lady Lions will donate a portion of the proceeds from the restaurant fundraiser, shirt sales, and game admission to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization.

“The Lady Lion basketball program and Ouachita Parish High School want to do our part to help a good cause, and we encourage our fans to turn out to support the effort,’’ Ouachita girls basketball coach John Merritt said. “Most people have been affected in some way by breast cancer, and we have experienced that within our own school family. We are happy to do anything we can to help find a cure for this disease.’’

Typical Ouachita basketball games feature a lot of cardinal red and white throughout the gym. On February 7, Merritt and the Lady Lions hope to see a sea of pink in the Madhouse in support of a good cause.

The challenge to fans is simple. Think pink, eat some good food, upgrade the wardrobe, and show off the new pink attire at the February 7 game.

Ouachita advances to second round of 5A playoffs
Ouachita's tough defense helped break open a close game in the third quarter to help the Lady Lions take a 47-37 victory at home Thursday night over defending state champion Natchitoches-Central in the first round of the Class 5A girls basketball playoffs.

The victory advances District 2-5A champion and No. 15 seed Ouachita (18-16) to the second round. The Lady Lions will travel to play Monday at No. 2 seed Denham Springs, which defeated No. 31 Slidell 62-29 Thursday night. Tip-off is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.

Ouachita and Natchitoches are district rivals, and that familiarity helped to create a close game through the first two quarters. Ouachita led 9-6 after the first period and 24-20 at halftime. But the Lady Lions racheted up the defense in the third quarter, holding Natchitoches to four points during the period to take a 36-24 lead into the fourth quarter. Natchitoches was never able to cut the deficit to less than 10 points after that.
