| 1-21-12 Lady Lions to start season Feb. 20 with road games The Ouachita Lady Lion softball team will begin the 2012 season under the direction of new head coach Tim Whitman on Feruary 20 with a road games against Alexandria Senior High and Menard. Ouachita will play its home opener February 23 against Caldwell. The 2012 home debut will feature a junior varsity contest at 4 p.m. and a varsity matchup at 5:30 p.m. 6-16-11 Ouachita adds proven winner to lead softball program The Ouachita Parish High School softball team will head into the 2011-12 season with a wealth of experience and success in charge of the Lady Lions. Ouachita Principal Todd Guice announced today the hiring of Tim Whitman to guide the school’s softball program. The hire is pending approval by the Ouachita Parish School Board. Whitman comes to Ouachita with a resume that includes a winning tradition as a coach in high school and college. He has an overall record of 543-152 (.781 winning percentage) and has won three high school state titles. Whitman replaces Kelly Stuckey, who stepped down after one season as the Ouachita head coach to become the head softball coach at Gladewater (Texas) High School. Stuckey guided the Lady Lions to a 17-10-1 record in 2011, the program’s best record in three years. “Our goal in this whole process was to find the coach that we felt could continue the progress in our softball program that we have experienced over the last several months under the leadership of Kelly Stuckey,’’ Guice said. “We feel like we have found the person in Tim Whitman to continue this growth and take our program to even greater success. After talking about Coach Whitman to softball coaches, athletic directors, and principals all over the state, it quickly became obvious to me that Tim was the choice to lead our program.’’ Whitman served as athletic director and head softball coach at Louisiana College in Pineville from 2002-1010, where he guided the Lady Wildcats softball program to a 320-73 record. His stint at Louisiana College also included a third-place finish in the NCAA Division III World Series, six regional appearances, three conference championships, and six consecutive years of Top 20 rankings. He was named the Louisiana Sports Writers Association softball Coach of the Year in 2008 and 2010. Prior to taking the reins at Louisiana College, Whitman guided an elite program at Pineville High School. He led the school to three state championships and one state runner-up finish from 1990-2001. His Pineville teams compiled a 223-79 record and won six district titles. He was named the top coach in his district six times and state Coach of the Year three times. Whitman said he likes the potential that Ouachita offers. “I did my homework about Ouachita, and everyone said it was a young, up-and-coming program,’’ Whitman said. “I thought it looked like a program that could be built, maybe put my own stamp on it.’’ Whitman takes over a program that graduated just four seniors from the 2011 team and had a number of freshmen and sophomores start or play pivotal roles. He said he is ready to generate some more excitement into the program with his leadership and style of play. “Fundamentals are what you have to be good at to be successful,’’ he said. “Most games are won or lost by who makes the fewest mistakes. And our kids are going to play hard no matter who we are playing.’’ 5-22-11 Four Lady Lions receive all-area recognition Four Ouachita softball players were named to the All-Northeast Louisiana Softball Team by The News-Star newspaper. Senior pitcher/infielder Janiece Tillman was named to the first team as a utility player. Tillman, who graduated this past week, is headed to Texas Southern on a softball scholarship. Junior Kelsey Webb, and freshmen Katherine Lee and Mallory Vining were all named honorable mention. 3-14-11 Lady Lions face busy week The Ouachita softball team is off to a strong start under first-year head coach Kelly Stuckey, and the Lady Lions have the opportunity to continue that trend in a big way this week with six games over five days. Ouachita is 9-4-1 so far this season after finishing 9-18-2 last season. The busy stretch begins with a big game Tuesday as the Lady Lions open District 2-5A play at home against West Monroe. The junior varsity teams are scheduled to play at 4 p.m. and the varsity teams are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. West Monroe is ranked No. 2 in the state in the Class 5A power rankings on kenramsey.com while Ouachita is ranked No. 12. The Lady Lions also play a district game at home Thursday against Pineville before playing four times in the Bayou Classic at ULM on Friday and Saturday. OPHS will face Claiborne Christian, Forest, Mangham, and Sterlington in the tournament. 2-27-11 OPHS wins one in tourney The Ouachita softball team finished 1-3 in the Polar Bear Classic held Friday and Saturday at multiple school sites. The Lady Lions now stand 2-3-1 on the season. Ouachita led Parkway by a run going into the final inning Friday, but Parkway rallied for three runs in the seventh inning to win 4-2. Ouachita's Yen Tran went 3-for-3 with an RBI, and Katherine Lee went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to pace the offense. Briane Puckett went 2-for-2 and Katelyn Lirette was 1-for-2. Ouachita's JV team also defeated Sterlington, 2-0. The Lady Lions will be back in action Thursday as they travel to face Ruston. The JV teams are scheduled to play at 4:30 p.m. and the varsity teams are scheduled to start a 6 p.m. Ouachita will also play host to the Polar Bear Classic this Friday and Saturday at the OPHS softball complex. 11-12-10 Tillman signs college scholarship Family, teammates, and friends gathered Friday afternoon in the Slusher Lobby of the Ouachita Parish High School gym to help Ouachita senior softball player Janiece Tillman celebrate her decision on her college future. Tillman, sitting alongside her mother and father, signed a national letter of intent to play softball for Texas Southern University in Houston. Tillman said she also considered the University of Mobile and William Carey University in Hattiesburg Mississippi, but she liked everything that TSU had to offer. “I have a full ride, and I like the coaches and the girls,’’ Tillman said. She said that Texas Southern also has the pre-law program that she plans to pursue. Tillman has started for three years at Ouachita, serving as the Lady Lions’ primary pitcher. She also plays infield when she is not on the mound. Tillman plans to continue as a pitcher at on the collegiate level. |
