| 3-14-11 Conway scores two wins OPHS athletes perform well in West Monroe meet Holli Conway won two events to lead group of strong Ouachita finishers at the West Monroe track meet Friday. Conway took first place in thegirls high jump and the girls triple jump. The girls 4x400 relay teamalso placed first. Second-place finishes went to Jake Hammer in the discus, Jarrett Triplett in the high jump, and Danielle Potter in the girls 400 run. Triplett also placed third in the shot put. Finishing third were Keandrick Wilson in the 400 run, Lashonte Jones in the girls discus, the girls 4x200 relay team, and the boys 4x400 relay team. Other top finishers included the boys 4x200 relay (fourth), Keandrick Wilson sixth in the triple jump, and Petra Ann Carpenter seventh in the girls shot put. The track team is scheduled to compete again Thursday at the Crossett (Ark.) meet. 5-5-10 Ouachita’s Tarvia Conway signs track scholarship Ouachita Parish High School senior Tarvia Conway signed a scholarship Wednesday to continue her track career on the collegiate level. Conway signed with the University of Louisiana at Lafayette during a ceremony at 11 a.m. in the OPHS library. Conway competes in both the triple jump and the long jump. She qualified for the state track meet in both events and will compete Saturday at LSU. Conway has personal bests of 17 feet, 9 ¾ inches in the long jump and 38-9 ½ in the triple jump. “I’ve always wanted to go to ULL,’’ Conway said of her college choice. The decision also keeps with a family tradition, and she admits that had a lot to do with her choice. Her father Hollis Conway was a track star at what was then called the University of Southwestern Louisiana in Lafayette. Hollis Conway was an All-American at USL, won two Olympic medals, and still holds the American indoor high jump record of 7-10 ½. "She’s provided good leadership,’’ Ouachita track coach Paul McComas said. “I never had to worry about her getting in trouble in the school building or being academically eligible. She was always going to do the right thing, and she consistently scores in the top three in every track meet." Tarvia Conway plans to pursue an education as an athletic trainer at ULL. She has been a student athletic trainer at Ouachita. 4-29-10 Conway headed to state meet Ouachita's Tarvia Conway has earned a trip to the state track meet next week with a strong performance at the regional meet in Lafayette on Wednesday. Conway finished third in both the long jump and the triple jump at regionals. Conway leaped 17 feet, 9 inches in the long jump and 38-8 1/2 in the triple jump. Conway will compete in the state track meet Saturday, May 8, at LSU. 4-21-10 OPHS athletes make regionals Several Ouachita track athletes performed well at Tuesday's District 2-5A meet and earned spots in next week's regional track meet in Lafayette. The top four finishers in each event at district qualified for the regional meet. Tarvia Conway led the girls with a double victory in the field events. Conway won the long jump with a leap of 16 feet, 4 1/2 inches and won the triple jump with an effort of 37-1 1/2. Holli Conway placed third in the high jump (4-6), Krisha James was third in the 800 (2:41.28), Kia Williams was third in the 400 (1:02.71), Lashontae Jones was fourth in the shot put (28-11 1/2), and Julia Coleman was fourth in the javelin (78-11). Ouachita also advanced girls relay teams in the 4X100 (second, 52.75), and 4X400 (third, 4:38.47). Top finishers for the Ouachita boys were Dominique Wilhite in the discus (third, 131-2) and Jameel Chatman in the 100 (third, 11.04). The other individual regional qualifier was Shabroderic Kelly in the 100 (fourth, 11.05) Ouachita qualified boys relay teams in the 4X100 (second, 43.35), 4X400 (third, 3:56.03), and 4X200 (third, 1:30.72). 4-12-10 Fox's Pizza Relays scheduled for Thursday at Ouachita The Ouachita Parish High School track and field team will serve as the host for the Fox?s Pizza Relays on Thursday, April 15, at the OPHS track. Field events are scheduled to start at 3:30 p.m., and running events are scheduled to begin at 5 p.m. The meet, which is the last one for Ouachita before the district meet, will feature eight teams. Besides host Ouachita, the meet includes Carroll, Neville, Ouachita Christian, Richwood, West Monroe, West Ouachita, and Wossman. Admission for the meet is $3. |
